Joe is the oldest member of the group; because of it he feels he's responsible for the safety of everyone. At first he feels they can't last very long by themselves but as time passes he learns that they are capable of many things. Joe is very protective, especially of Mimi who he feels needs the most protecting. Joe unlike Tai thinks too much before acting and usually gets on everybody nerves. But he's very dependable and when he makes a promises he'll do everything in his power to keep it; that's why he carries the crest of sincerity.

Joe's digimon partner is Gomamon. Unlike most of the other digimon partners Gomamon's personality is completely opposite from Joe. Gomamon is relaxed, playful and sure of himself. He makes fun of Joe all the time but only to make him realize how silly he acts. The truth is that Gomamon admires Joe's sense of responsibility and will help him to achieve his goals. Gomamon's evolution stages are Ikkakumon and Zudomon.
